June 10, 2006 Cock-a-doodle-doo!! That’s what we awoke to this morning. It’s amazing that roosters really do call out like this in the early morning hours. We rolled over and went back to sleep for a couple more hours before getting up and packing our tent. We then headed to Bali Hai Restaurant for a nice breakfast.
After breakfast, we headed to Kayak Kauai and rented a two-person kayak. We navigated (poorly, I might add) through a series of very tight turns amidst muddy banks and bushes before making it out to the Hanalei River. We had high hopes of paddling our way all the way up the river and then back out to the ocean and Hanalei Bay. However, as we paddled away, our kayak filled with muddy water and with the sun beating down us, we quickly revised our plans. We didn’t make it all the way up the river, nor did we make it to the ocean, but we did have a lot of fun and even sat just to take in God’s creation. Exhausted, we headed back to the dock, again running into muddy banks.
Our next stop was the Kilaeua Lighthouse, which is Hawaii’s northernmost point. We enjoyed it, but we were getting hungry for lunch, so we headed to Lighthouse Bistro for some good sandwiches and fries. In hopes of avoiding another bad dining experience, we decided we would return to the same restaurant for dinner.
In between our meals, we checked out Anini Beach, where we would be camping that night, and hung out at the Bali Hai pool. Dinner that night was a little disappointing, but we were excited to set up camp at Anini. We were much faster that night and were even able to walk down closer to the water to catch a quick glimpse of the sunset. Another peaceful night of rest listening to the endless waves.
