June 12, 2006 FIFA World Cup 2006. USA vs. Czech Republic. A heart-wrenching loss for the US, which began at 5am. I was crushed, as sweet Kelli slept in the upstairs loft. Trying to put the devastating defeat behind us, we headed to a nearby restaurant called Obsessions for breakfast. We were definitely disappointed in the food and headed up to Waimea Canyon for some sightseeing. Waimea Canyon is considered the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”. From the cliffs of the canyon, we were able to look out and see both Waipo’o Falls and Wailua Falls. It was a hazy morning, but it was beautiful nonetheless.We hit the shower at Neil’s and packed our stuff to leave and get some lunch at the Kalaheo Café. The sandwiches were great, and we drove on to Spouting Horn, which is Kauai’s saltwater version of Old Faithful. We passed the Tree Tunnel along the way, which is simply a long, narrow road canopied by trees. Spouting Horn was fun, though it was tough to get a good picture of the water blowing into the sky. We checked out the shops that were there and then went to JoJo’s for some shaved ice and ice cream. That may sound like two different things, but they actually put the ice cream at the bottom of the snow cones in Kauai.
We made several quick stops, trying to see the sights on our last full day in Kauai. We stopped at Black Sand Beach, the Russian Fort, Salt Pond Beach (our campsite that night) and finally headed back to the Marriott Beach. We didn’t see any turtles but were able to play in the water and rest and read on the beach. Before leaving, we jumped in one of the many hot tubs surrounding the Marriott pool, again marveling at its size and beauty and vowed to spend our last day there.
As the sun began to go down, we headed to Pomodoro’s for an Italian dinner. We loved everything about the restaurant; so much so that we were oblivious to how dark it was outside. We quickly headed to Salt Pond Beach to set up camp. Thank God, there weren’t any spiders.
