Twice this semester, for Personal Spiritual Disciplines, I'm to spend three hours in worship, prayer, meditation, and journaling. Not long into the exercise, I realized I've never spent this kind of focused time and energy on worship. Today was one of the most rewarding days I can remember. Setting aside distractions and deadlines, I spent sweet time with Jesus and treasured Him in His power, creativity, holiness, suffering, vindication, redemption...His glory!
Certainly God uses life to fit us for heaven, where the praise and worship of our worthy God will never cease! So make time for devoted worship, that you may see and savor the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. And do it this resurrection week especially, meditating on and treasuring the work Jesus did, on your behalf, bearing your sins (and mine) in His body, on the tree, that we may die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds, we have been healed!
Below is Don Whitney's very helpful suggestion for how to spend three consecutive hours of silence and solitude:
- :20 Worshiping the Lord in song (perhaps while playing an instrument or listening to music)
- :20 Bible reading and reflection
- :30 Praying through and meditating on Scripture (perhaps while walking; meditation assumes you've memorized Scripture, so hide the Word in your heart)
- :30 Journaling
- :30 Devotional reading (not a book you have to read for school, church, etc., but simply an edifying Christian book you’ve wanted to read)
- :20 Praying through and meditating on Scripture (perhaps while walking)
- :20 Journaling
- :10 Worshiping the Lord in song (as above) and/or devotional reading (as above)
